Thursday July 10, 2014 (tour day 4): Another picture-perfect day in Riga! The morning started with a rehearsal in preparation for Allegria's participation in Zimfira's workshop (which will be attended by some of the biggest international conductors/jurors) as well as for their other upcoming performances. Following rehearsal, the group went on a walking tour of Riga's gorgeous old town. Riga is clean and friendly, and jam packed with choristers from all over the world!
Pictured below, you see Allegria standing in front of the Latvia Freedom Monument. This monument is an important symbol of the independence and sovereignty of Latvia (approximately 1920).
Riga is full of beautiful and interesting architecture. The Old Town of Riga used to be surrounded by walls on all sides to keep invaders out. Apparently, at some point in the 15th Century, it was decided that the Old Town required a more central entranceway. A homeowner (whose house was built into the outer wall of the city) was paid a handsome sum to have a hole excavated through his house to provide this new conduit.
Day 5 started with another rehearsal for Allegria's upcoming performances on the weekend, and then continued with an afternoon outing to Jurmala ("Seaside"), a nearby beach resort 30 minutes away from Riga on the Baltic Sea. Historically the rich and aristocracy traveled to Jurmala to enjoy its tranquility. Allegria spent a couple hours here on a windy day, and some enjoyed the refreshing water!
After Jumarla Allegria headed to supper, and on the bus over made more friends with participating groups. The bus rides around the city are so enjoyable when it involves sharing music! In this photo, the groups are taking turns singing for each other (followed by huge applause!)
The day ended with a concert by The Real Group
- an incredible a cappella ensemble from Sweden. The group performs classical, folk, jazz, and pop songs - and Allegria was floored. We hope to cross paths with this group again while they're still in town!
